The Delivery Dance, also known as the Grubhub Ad, is a commercial in which several animated characters perform a "delivery dance" while consuming various foods. The commercial was heavily panned for its weird animation and pandering. Its hate would soon lead to it becoming a internet meme starting in January 2021.

History[]

On November 16, 2020, Grubhub's YouTube channel posted a 30-second-long video with Bomba Estéreo's song "Soy Yo"[1] with 3D rendered animation of people dancing in a red background room because Grubhub made them happy. The purpose of the commercial was to make people want to order from Grubhub and copy the dances shown in the ad.[2] In two months, the video received over 882,000 views (15,000 likes and 65,000 dislikes).

Web usage[]

The Delivery Dance later got popular in January 2021 for how bad it is. There have been many memes making fun of the commercial, with examples being removing the cringe, pairing it with the Kroger Commercial, or just editing it to make it funny. People will often comment on these videos, saying "it's better than the original Grubhub".

On November 19, 2020, Redditor xxdogfartxx posted the video in r/CommercialsIHate subreddit, where it received over 130 upvotes in two months.[3]

On November 21, YouTube user shawnee p uploaded the earliest found edit of the commercial, with the video gaining over 3,100 views in two months.[4] On November 26, YouTube user Braden220 uploaded the first instance in which the song was replaced, using "Long Time" by Playboi Carti.[5] The edit garnered over 5,200 views in one month.

On December 21, 2020, Twitter account Cursed Commercials (@CursedAds) reuploaded the commercial, with the post gaining over 260 retweets and 2,100 likes.[6]

Starting in late December 2020, a number of posts in which users expressed their dislike for the commercial and the characters were made in r/CommercialsIHate subreddit. For example, on December 30, 2020, Redditor ames54 made a post that received over 380 upvotes in two weeks.[7] One day later on December 31, 2020, Redditor RapIsGoodKpopIsBad made a post that gained over 450 upvotes in two weeks.[8] On January 5, 2021, Redditor DoggedMeerkat76 posted an Iceberg Tier Parody meme that received over 400 upvotes in one week.[9] The meme was widely circulated online in the following days.[10]

In the following week, the video became a popular source material for edits and analysis videos, particularly on YouTube and Twitter. For example, on January 8, 2021, YouTube user Gourune posted a video that received over 431,000 views in three days.[11]

Grubhub Cinematic Universe[]

In late January 2021, people found other Grubhub commercials, most notably a commercial involving the pregnant lady from the Delivery Dance where it is revealed she's married to the purple shirt guy, who is also from the Delivery Dance commercial. Another notable example is that a dog appears in three commercials on different occasions.
