Basic Description

Rage Comics are a short panel comic using a set of pre-made and/or drawn cartoon faces, or Rage Faces. This set is quickly growing in size. They were most popular in the early 2010s.

Rage Comics usually express rage or some other simple emotions or mundane activities. These comics have spread similarly in the same way that internet memes do, and several memes have originated in this medium. They have been characterized by Ars SAY Technica as an "accepted and standardized form of online communication". The popularity of Rage Comics has been attributed to their use as vehicles for humorizing shared experiences. The range of expressions and standardized, easily identifiable faces has allowed uses such as teaching English as a foreign language.

Rage Comics are normally poorly created and drawn comics, often created with MS Paint (Microsoft Paint). However, despite them being badly drawn, they have evolved into a meme over-time. Rage Comics were at their peak in the late 2000s and early 2010s. But there may also be more modern rage comics such as Cover Yourself in Oil, but then after 2010, the meme started dying, which made the public make a newer version of Trollface (Trollge).

History

The first Rage Comics was posted to the 4chan /b/random board in 2008. It was a simple 4-panel strip showing the author's anger about getting "splashback" while on the toilet, with the final panel featuring a zoomed-in face, known as Rage Guy, screaming "FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-". It was quickly reposted and modified numerous times, with other users creating new scenarios and new characters.

Although used on numerous Websites such as Reddit, Cheezburger, ESS.MX, and 9GAG, the source of the Rage Comic has largely been attributed to 4chan in mid-2007. One very notable site is Ragestache, the most popular of the Spartz Media sites, which is devoted exclusively to rage comics and has over 1,900 pages, as of January 2014.

Rage Comics were first made where the majority of most memes originate, the 4Chan Board, /B/. The faces in Rage Comics range from the infamous "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-" Face, also called Rage Guy, to Forever Alone, the Trollface, and many more.

These comics usually consist of scenarios where, for example, cereal, or Pokémon Go make someone rage. Below on this page are characters that were used in Rage Comics.

Forever Alone

Forever Alone is a lonesome character that is used to express loneliness and disappointment with life. Creators of this variety of rage comic occasionally alter one word or both of the words “forever alone” for a more humorous effect.

Y U NO Guy

Y U NO Guy is a character using SMS shorthands and carefree grammar as a way to bring someone’s attention on a particular subject or issue. The face comes from Gantz’ Chapter 55: Naked King (裸の王様), a Japanese sci-fi manga originally released in February 2002.

Me Gusta

Me Gusta Guy is a character that is typically used to respond to an awkward or disgusting event with “Me Gusta,” which ironically means “It Pleases Me” in Spanish, often understood as “I like it” in English. Origin: Created by Redditor “Insert” who first posted the face on 4chan in March of 2010. The Me Gusta Guy is generally used to express pleasure for awkward or sometimes disgusting situations.

Trollface

Trollface is a character used to imply mischievousness or trolling and is the most accepted symbol of trolling. He is considered the mascot of Rage Comics by some fans and is also considered Rage Guy's enemy. He is also playable in the now deleted and no longer available Wii U game, Meme Run.

It's origin is disputed, since it was first uploaded on January 2007 under the name Coolface, but it was popularly known that the Trollface was originally drawn by Carlos Ramirez, also known at that time as Tyler_mon, an Oakland-based artist known by his DeviantArt handle Wynne, as part of a MS Paint webcomic about the pointless nature of trolling on a video game forum in September 19th, 2008. There is also a claim on Reddit that it was originally created by the name of Patrick Kurtz, also known as BluesMan1866, but this claim is yet to be confirmed.
