About

Shock Sites are websites designed to offend or startle the viewer. These sites usually feature pornographic/graphic images or videos. Online, many use these sites as a social challenge or through Bait and Switch pranks in which people trick others into visiting the website. "Traditional" shock sites are intended to get an immediate reaction and generally fall into several categories, including pictures, video or viruses, in which the site crashes and potentially damages the visitor's computer.

Origin

On July 23rd, 1996, the founder of the web hosting company Soylent Communications, someone created the site "Rotten.com". Rotten.com was a shock site that collected real pictures of dead people, disgusting diseases, deformed bodies, and more.

Spread

As internet usage increased over the next decade, shock sites, as well as message- and imageboards, such as 2chan and 4chan, where links to these sites spread, launched, the number of shock sites grew like Encyclopedia Dramatica.

List of Shock Sites

• Goatse - A image of a man stretching his anus with both hands, revealing his rectum. The original domain has shutdown. The image's filename is "hello.jpg". It also links to other shock sites, has a contrib page and "The Giver" which features a man in a chair with his penis on his torso. The contrib page contains many Goatse-related art such as the Magic Eye File.
  • Magic Eye File - Magic Eye is a file hosted on the original Goatse site. It is on the contrib page of the original site. The "image" features an autostereogram and tells the viewer to stare and focus on it and try to guess what it is. After 14 seconds, the autostereogram changes into the image of Goatse.
• 2G1C - A trailer of a 2008 scat film, that was known as "2 Girls 1 Cup" was depicted of two women defecating and vomiting into each other. There are other videos like this like "4 Girls 1 Fingerpaint" created by the same creator of 2G1C, known as "MFX Media". It is one of the most reacted shock videos on YouTube and Vimeo.
• 1M1J - Another video known as "1 Man 1 Jar" which is a video posted to eFukt on December 4, 2008, as titled "1 Guy 1 Cup", shows a man putting a glass jar up to his rectum to the point where it breaks after it completely goes in; after the glass breaks into his rectum, which causes it to bleed, he starts quietly removing the glass before the video ends there. The man was identified as Alexey Tatarov, who was of Russian descent and married with two kids.
• BME Pain Olympics - A set of promotional videos created by BMEZine, an online magazine devoted to body modification, on 2005. The video purports to be a montage of rather extreme forms of castration, such as people mutilating their genitals in the most painful way possible, hence its name.
• Blue Waffle - An image of a diseased vagina. Blue Waffle was originally started as a rumor from various online sources, claiming it to be a real STD disease that could disfigure someone's vagina and turn blue, but it has since been debunked. However, many users referred to Blue Waffle as a shock site; it also spawned many parodies, such as Red Pancake, which depicts a diseased anus, and Giant Cheese Taco, which depicts a diseased ulcerated vagina covered in yellow pus and blood.
• Screamer Cactus (unofficial Name) - a picture of a man with a cactus inside his anus, with a very small amount of semen about to out of his penis
• Kekma - A shock site that displays a warning that it contained "dark and adult humor". The button, if clicked, will entirely changed the website into a castration video on the center of two flashing gruesome images, and plays an extremely loud and pitched version of "The Loud Orgasm" on loop. Kekma was originally created in April 23, 2019, with the intent of previously becoming an alt-right Reddit clone. The site gained its own first popularity after it became one of the trending articles on the meme-dedicated site Know Your Meme.
• Lemon Party - An image of three elderly naked men, with one of them blowing and the other two kissing, accompanied by the 1963 doo-wop song "If You Wanna Be Happy" by Jimmy Soul. Months later, the site entirely changed to an image of a kitten and a link "to wash your eyeballs!", which leads to a kitten with metals. The site then changed back to its original state later on.
• Last Measure - One of the most destructive shock sites of all time. Last Measure was a shock site made in 2003 by the internet trolling group GNAA, which is an acronym for the Gay [Hard R] Association of America. The original website displayed the Goatse image as its background, and then opened several browser windows displaying different shock images, including Tubgirl, Lemon Party, Pillowfight, etc, along with an extremely loud looped audio of a man screaming "HEY EVERYBODY, I'M LOOKING AT GAY PORNO!" to alert people near you. A script on the website would also try to use the "mailto" and "callto" functions with the intent to cause the viewer's computer to freeze.

Encyclopedia Dramatica

• The Pain Series - The Pain Series is a set of seven shock images created by user Huge_Midget on the Something Awful Forums in 2003. The Pain Series contains seven collages of images involving dead people, genital diseases, mutilation, gore, pornography, images from other shock sites like Goatse and Tubgirl, and more gruesome content.
• Offended - Offended is a shock webpage located on the website Encyclopedia Dramatica. The page was created on the original .com domain on August 17, 2007, by an ED user, Chankachankaboo. The page begins with a message at the top of the page that reads: "THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN. Were you offended by what you just saw? Please scroll SLOWLY to the bottom of this page and we will be happy to rectify your situation. =)". Below this message is a string of images in order: a picture of the "Limecat" meme, a baby rabbit, a chick, a dog, and finally, a deer and a rabbit. Under the final "normal" image is a large montage of gruesome images.
• Reporting Un-Islamic Content - The article begins with a montage of normal Islamic-Related images. Scrolling down further reveals a collage of images containing graphic content and pornography.

Collections

• BestGore - A website collection of uncensored real-life violence and media, created by Canadian-Slovakian Mark Marek on April 30th, 2008. The website went down permanently on November 15, 2020, after Marek decided to focus on other interests.
• Encyclopedia Dramatica - A MediaWiki-based site that documents current events and internet culture, purposely written in an extremely offensive way "for the lulz." The wiki was created by Sherrod DeGrippo, when she had grown interest of documenting LiveJournal dramas.
• Klerck.org - A website containing three shock content, including Meatspin, Dance.swf, and Christmas.jpg. The website's owner, "Kevin Ealy," was also known by the alias "klerck" and was a prominent troll himself; Kevin Ealy was later confirmed to have committed suicide in 2005, with a suicide note left posted on his LiveJournal page.
• LiveLeak - A British video sharing website which hosted collections of graphic videos of real violence, including an execution video of Iraqi politician Saddam Hussein and the beheading of US journalist James Foley. The site, which was previously known as Ogrish, was introduced on October 31, 2006, by various founders including Hayden Hewitt. LiveLeak, however, went defunct and was replaced by another site, ItemFix, which bans "excessive violence or gory content."
