The Irregular Show Episode 1

An incredibly popular Regular Show YTP.

"Where there's smoke, they pinch back!"

YouTube Poop or commonly known as YTP for short, is a method of video editing, which became more popular as the success of the video portal, YouTube, grew. As it became the most popular video uploading website ever, it was only natural that these strange creations would be posted, and though they are now created for humor, they were originally upIoaded as an in-joke between a group of friends. To make them, all one really requires is some downloaded video and a video editor, although other things can aIso be added such as music and memes.

The definition of "YouTube Poop" is often disputed amongst fans of its creations and creators. For example, in Rocketboom's "Know Your Meme" series (Weegee episode, 7 August 09), they stated that "YouTube Poop are clips of cartoons and other assorted junk strung together to form nonsensical moving images on YouTube."

History of YouTube Poop[]

YouTube Poop originated with the YouTuber SuperYoshi, who was using Windows Movie Maker that, at the time, was a new editing software that come with a new installation of Windows XP and Windows NT 5.0. SuperYoshi tested the new software by using the episode "Recycled Koopa" from the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon. The result would be a video using a few clips from the episode that often repeated and were used randomly, much like the YTP content that would follow soon after. On December 22, 2004, the test was posted as a video on his SheezyArt page, titled "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 Remixed." The video would receive positive reception, leading SuperYoshi and his friend RetroJape to collaborate on similar "remixes" using both the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon and later Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. The first three YTPs that would officially be posted to YouTube later on would be I'D SAY HE'S HOT ON OUR TAIL, Dr. Light's Guidance System Show, and Robotnik's Sodomy Fest of 2005.

The term of "YouTube Poop" was coined by YouTuber Yaminomalex, who described what he did with his friends as "uploading poop to YouTube." The term was heavily criticized by a few members of the YouTube community, going so far as having some of them try to change it all together. Despite this backlash, the term stuck and shaped YTP to what it is today.

There are multiple precursors to what would become YTP found throughout various media. The earliest example of "proto-YTP" is the Warner Brothers cartoon Daffy Duck in Hollywood, made in 1938. The "movie" (an edited film reel) that was created by Daffy and shown at the climax of the short displays many characteristics of YTP content such as reversing clips, overdubbing, and so on. A more bizarre example comes from an attack advertisement made by Richard Nixon against Hurbert Humphrey during the 1968 presidential campaign. This ad bears a more surprising similarity to what would be used for modern and early YTP conventions. YTPs themselves can also be compared to the Dada movement, which was a World War I response that rejected common rationality.

With the increase in popularity of YTPs shifting from videos solely made to confuse others (which was the original intention of YTP) to more modern changes such as adding stories to YTP and the growing use of more advanced software in later years.

Although most of the YouTube Poop videos are made in English, there are videos produced in other languages, too, e.g. in Russian (called "RYTP" = "Russian YouTube Poop"), German (German YouTube Poop is commonly called "YouTube-Kacke" and is a literal translation of the original name), Spanish ("YTPH" = YouTube Poop Hispano), Brazilian Portuguese ("YTPBR" = YouTube Poop Brasil), Finnish ("STP" = SinäTuubaPaska, literally "You Tuba Shit"), and many others. However, many of these foreign YTP's have yet to gain exposure among the English-speaking Poopers (as doing Foreign Remake versions of them would be impossible knowing what happened to Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo and the MyNetworkTV telenovelas) despite them having memes of their own (for example STP turned the Dolf episodes of Alfred J. Kwak into a meme and so did YTPH and YTPBR with Don Ramon from El Chavo del Ocho).

YouChew was the biggest (unofficial) forum for YTP on the Internet from 2007 until its closure in September 2018. Since then, various attempts at continuing the site's legacy have been made, including a failed reboot and several splinter groups. Only one of these groups, YTPMania, maintained a decent userbase and lifespan before its closure in 2022. The current torch-bearer was Pinchbacks, however was shut down due to the owner getting overwhelmed.

List of YTP Sources[]

  • Adventure Time
  • Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
  • The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 (because this cartoon is remarkable for being the very first source to be used in YTPs.)
  • Animaniacs (specifically the episode Clown and Out)
  • Arthur (because of the episode "Arthur's Big Hit" is particularly favored. "I TOLD YOU! NOT! TO TOUCH IT!")
  • Azumanga Daioh
  • I.M. Meen, an old DOS game animated by the folks who animated the CD-i games. The sequel Chill Manor is also used. Notably the ending cutscene where I.M. Meen "rapes" a chair.
  • Dragon Ball and his memes, such as "The balls are inert", "Shoop Da Whoop" and "IT'S OVER 9000!".
  • Phineas and Ferb
  • The "WTF Boom" is rather often used in Poops, to the frustration of the pooping community, who consider it overused and predictable.
  • Weegee, a singularly creepy image of Luigi derived from his weird sprite in the PC version of Mario Is Missing. Before this, Weegee was a standard Image Macro meme. And also: Malleo, Walleo, and Waweegee have made appearances (For anyone wondering Malleo is like Mario, Walleo and Waweegee are good versions of Wario and Waluigi respectively).
  • The Volvic Commercials with Tyrannosaurus Alan and George the Volcano
  • SpongeBob SquarePants (because of The Ugly Barnacle skit from "Something Smells", Chocolate? CHOOOOOOCOOOOOOOLAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!!!!, Moar Krabs (Don't forget Skodwarde and Spengbab.) and No, This Is Patrick. And also: Keep in mind, though, Executive Meddling from Viacom has made these hard to come by, even though they're fair use under U.S. law. That said, one Poop titles itself as "The Only Spongebob Poop Viacom Can't Remove," because it takes all its footage from the video game Operation Krabby Patty, and Viacom can't remove game footage from YouTube. Some Poopers called him SpingeBill, spawning an entire sub-genre of Poop. These frequently rely on surreal imagery to get their point across.)
  • The animated Dr. Seuss TV specials from the 70's and 80's. (especially Green Eggs and Ham)
  • The Legend of Zelda (Cartoon) "Well, Excuse Me, Princess!!".
  • The SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog Cartoon series is used frequently, but less so than Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, despite being much more serious. Heck, all of the Sonic cartoons are used often.
  • Super Mario World (especially the episodes "Mama Luigi", "Rock TV", "The Yoshi Shuffle" and "The Night Before Cave Christmas")
  • The Critic (particularly the Orson Welles scenes, as well as the Couch Gag of Jay Sherman waking up and answering his phone.)

  • Some of the popular prime time cartoons from FOX (The Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad) can sometimes be found in poops, but Executive Meddling has made these hard to come by.

  • Various Hitler films and footage of his speeches. (AKA, the Hitler Rants)
  • The Magic School Bus (usually the intro)
  • Rocko's Modern Life - particularly the "Wacky Delly" episode. ("I am the cheese!")
  • Dexter's Laboratory (usually Mandark scenes)
  • The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (Usually the scenes with Fred Fredburger)

  • Star Fox 64 ("Do a Barrel Roll!")
  • Doug (particularly the Disney series)
  • Hey! Arnold
  • My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
  • Regular Show
  • The Dr. Rabbit cartoons by Colgate (A long saga of Colgate-Palmolive trying to get these off YouTube culminated in the very popular pooper WalrusGuy being banned briefly; his return was taken as a quiet admission by Colgate-Palmolive that the Dr. Rabbit videos could be used. And also: There also exists a Dr. Rabbit flash cartoon as well as a Dr. Rabbit puppet show. Neither of which are as popular as the standard cartoons, but they still appear frequently in poops. Almost every other Dr. Rabbit YTP mocks the copyright infringement battles.)
  • Mario's disembodied head from Mario Teaches Typing 2.
  • The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! (Do the Mario!)
  • South Park (Particularly They Killed Kenny Again and the scene of Randy Marsh on Wheel of Fortune saying "The N Word". These poops are also rare due to Executive Meddling from Viacom.)

  • Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy ("A dickie?! They still make these?")
  • Conkers Bad Fur Day (usually "The Great Mighty Poo")
  • Stay Tooned, yet another old game containing very poorly-animated cutscenes. Contains a parody of Seinfeld, called Whinefeld, which is the most well-known part of this source.

  • The Leeroy Jenkins video
  • YouTube Celebrities are also used, like Chris Crocker or Chad Warden.

Poopisms[]

There are a number of techniques commonly employed by YouTube Poopers, called Poopisms. These do not refer to what the source material is, but rather, how it has been manipulated. Some examples of Poopisms are:

  • Ear Rape: Volume is maxed out and distorted. The intention is generally to annoy.
  • Stutter Loop: A short piece of video is looped in order to call attention or emphasize something.
  • Word Trim/Sentence Mix: Words are cut and rearranged, often to create profanity.
  • YTPMV (Classic): A sample is sequenced to an audio track to vaguely simulate something like “singing.”
  • YTPMV: Notes in source materials are pitch shifted to create a song.
